Math 590- Advanced Linear Algebra (Spring 2021)

  1. Text (recommended): Friedberg, Insel and Spence “Linear Algebra” 5th edition. ISBN-13: 978-0134860244 ISBN-10: 0134860241 Pearson/Prentice Hall.  I will also handout extensive lecture notes from time to time.

    1. Reading and writing proofs
    2. Vector spaces
    3. Matrices
    4. Linear Transformations
    5. Determinants
    6. Eigenvalue, Eigenvectors
    7. Diagonalization
    8. Inner-Product spaces.
    9. (possibly) Multi-linear forms.
  3. Prerequisite: Math 127 or 147 or 223, or 243; and Math 290 or 291. Not open to students with credits in Math 792.

  9. EXAMS (subject to change) All exams are given online.You can have a one-page cheat sheet, closed book, no calculator. 
    1. There will be two midterm and one final. First Midterm: March 16; Second Midterm: April 8th; Final (according to university schedule): Tuesday, May 11th, 7:30am – 10:00am (Tentative)
  10. Grading policy: Homework 20%, Midterms 20% + 20%, Final Exam 40%. Letter Grade: A: 90 -100, B: 80-90, C:70-80, D: 60-70, F: 0 – 59.
